Video Streaming — Live and On-Demand

I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about video streaming. Through various online sources and the right internet speed, I found out I can download music, movies, tv shows and sporting events without having to wait for endless download times. In other words, the stream can be played right away while it continues to download, eliminating the hours of wait time. Streams can either be live or on-demand. Live means it is viewed or listened to right away without being saved to a hard drive, and it can only be viewed once. Certain events like concerts or sporting events are often viewed live. On-demand is saved to a hard disk and can be viewed over and over again for a select period of time. The technology continues to improve rapidly, and as the demand grows exponentially, suppliers will rise to the occasion and give us what we’re looking for!

Instant Message into the 21st Century

With the internet becoming more and more accessible to the population, communication is rapidly evolving. E-mail has become one of the most popular forms of communication today; not even 20 years ago, this form of communication was a rarity and was largely unknown to most people. With the expectation that communication be instant, it makes sense that we would consider that e-mail isn’t fast enough. Instant messaging is quickly evolving into the way communication happens. With the people you interact with through an IM contact list, you can type messages to each other which shows up on both your screen and theirs if they are available. The features shared through IM include chat, web links, videos, pictures, files, streaming, and IM through cell phone.

Bundling High Speed Internet With Other Services

When it comes to putting dollars into your pocket, our free market system is working beautifully as competition also encourages companies to get creative in offering savings in unique ways to attract customers. While expanding infrastructure enables companies to offer new services such as high speed internet, telephone and television deals, bundling makes sense for both sides. Interestingly, telecom companies that bundle services also seemed to have fewer customer service complaints according to Consumer Reports in 2009.

So how do you go about choosing a bundled service? I would begin by checking out the internet service providers in my area. Satellite tends to be more widely available, while DSL and cable are prevalent in suburban and urban areas. Extra integrated services like caller ID displayed on your television screen or being able to program your DVR from your cell phone or off-site internet connection are popping up; other extras include free installation and extended guarantee of lower prices.

Good News for Video Stream Fans

In an article just released by Reuters News Service via Yahoo News, agreement has been made between Warner Brothers and Netflix regarding movies sent via streaming. Netflix will wait 28 days before offering new titles through their DVD and Blue Ray mail subscriptions, while Warner Bros has agreed that they will allow more offerings to be sent directly via stream to Netflix subscribers. This is great news for fans of video streaming, as Netflix has vowed to expand their streaming segment according to Ted Sarandos, chief content officer. Last January, 2009, Netflix reported a 30% increase in streaming subscriptions in just one quarter. With this type of growth, it makes sense for Netflix and Warner to make more movies available to customers. As the technology improves, the demand for quality high speed internet will continue to grow.

High Speed Dial-up Internet Service Providers in My Area

I am contemplating looking for internet service providers in my area because I find myself spending less and less time actually surfing the net these days as my dial-up seems to be dragging it’s feet.  I found out it’s not my dial-up that’s changing, but the web content itself. Dial-up is limited to whatever bandwidth is relegated to my low frequency phone line. Not only that, but because so many people have switched to a broadband connection, web site designers are placing content on their web sites that are, simply put, bandwidth hogs. I am still committed to the low cost of dial-up but wish to check out some alternatives that will make my internet time more productive.  I found a great website on internet providers to see what’s new in high speed dial-up with reliable providers such as NetZero. High speed dial-up provides an abbreviated handshake protocol as well as acceleration server technology utilizing compression, filtering and caching to speed information back to your computer screen. If your internet usage doesn’t warrant high speed internet at this time, high speed dial-up might be just what you’re looking for.

Six Months Free With Verizon Internet Service

Verizon is a household name that I trust and respect. It can now boast being the first company to offer fiber-optic-to-the-house technology, which admittedly is the fastest, most reliable technology to date for high speed internet service. With Verizon internet service, affordable packages are available with speeds and features to handle whatever my requirements are. Features included are Verizon Yahoo, which has parental controls, Yahoo Messenger, spam-guard, and pop-up blockers. With the Verizon Starter Plan I can get high speed internet for a great low monthly price. For faster speeds, there’s the Verizon Power Plan and the Verizon Turbo 7.1. And for a limited time only Verizon is offering 6 months free to new subscribers.

I hope that Verizon is one of the internet service providers in my area, as the deals and features are just too great to ignore.

Internet Safety for Your Children

Helping children navigate the outside world online can be a wonderful learning experience. For older children, internet access is a must in order to excel at school. However, if you have watched the news you are well aware that children are targets for predators online. Rather than banning your child’s internet access altogether, a few strategic safety measures can greatly increase the protection of your children online.

  • Establish ground rules. Rules should include length of time online, what is appropriate content to search for, how to handle inappropriate content, and guidelines on how to establish online friends. Rules should be age appropriate, with more freedom given to older children.
  • Use filters. Filters are available for e-mail, search engines, and web browsers. It’s important to remember that filters do not protect 100% of the time; proper oversite and even computer monitoring might be appropriate.
  • Monitor the computer’s activity. Checking browser history, cookies, and using monitoring software are some ideas. If you feel like this is being too cautious, keep in mind the ramifications of not watching them.
  • Keep computers common areas. Children are less likely to seek out inappropriate content if they know someone can walk in the room at any time.
  • Create separate accounts. Accounts can be set up with different levels of access allowed, which will limit what can be viewed or accessed.
